I am always being asked how Cairns get along with children. Since my children (ages 27, 25, 14 & 4) have been growing up with my dogs for the past 20+ years, I of course say that they are wonderful children's dogs. My puppies though have had the advantage of being introduced to and used to being handled by children from a very early age. Both the puppies and the children must learn to "respect" each other. Every puppy should have a family, but not every family should have a puppy or a dog. Life styles, personalities and disciplinary protocol are not always capable of handling both a rambunctious puppy and child at the same time. Dave's first dog was a Fox Terrier. He says that there is not a better type of dog than a terrier for a kid's dog. They are small enough not to over-whelm small children, yet tough enough not to be hurt by rambunctious child's play. Below is a collection of photographs of Cairns & Kids from over the years. As far as I am concerned there is nothing cuter than puppies and babies.

Here is an e-mail I received from Christopher's father: Jerrie, Please feel free to use my picture on your web site. May I add that I have a new found appreciation for the reluctance of some breeders to give their puppies to families with young children. In short, parent(s) who can barely manage a hyperactive child or a number of normally active children will discover that a puppy is an additional responsibility and not free entertainment for their children. During the first month that you bring your puppy home, both puppy and children need to be supervised and taught about respecting each other and each other's personal space. During the first 2 months, I had to defend Simon from my children and not the other way around. I would be happy to expand on this subject but I think that you know what I am talking about. Best regards, Richard
